04 - ¼ cup sugar
05 - 2 cups all-purpose flour

→ Wet Ingredients

08 - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

→ Mix-ins and Topping

09 - Extra milk to brush over dough
10 - Sugar for sprinkling on top
11 - 1 cup dark chocolate chips

# Instructions:

01 - Set oven to 400°F to heat up.
02 - In a big bowl, stir together baking soda, baking powder, flour, sugar, and salt.
03 - Shred butter with a grater, then work it into the dry mix with a pastry tool until it feels crumbly.
04 - Stir the chocolate chips into the crumbly mixture.
05 - Pour buttermilk and vanilla together, and gently fold this into your dry mix. Watch out—don’t overdo the stirring!
06 - Sprinkle flour on a surface, knead the dough briefly, and press it into a circle about 1½ inches thick. Slice into 8–10 pieces.
07 - Spread the dough slices on parchment-covered baking sheet. Brush the tops with milk and scatter some sugar over them.
08 - Pop into oven for 20 to 22 minutes or until they’re golden and a toothpick comes out dry. Move to a wire rack to cool.

# Notes:

01 - Make sure your baking powder is fresh (under 1 year).
02 - Cold or frozen butter gives better results
03 - Overmixing makes the dough tough, so be gentle.
